To add live chat to Weebly, paste one script tag into your site’s footer code under Settings, then publish. The chat bubble appears on every page, and Mio, the AI assistant from Talkmio, starts answering visitors from your own pages while your team handles whatever needs a person. The whole job takes a few minutes and needs no developer, no app from the Weebly App Center and no change to your theme.
This guide walks through both ways Weebly accepts custom code, explains which one to use for a chat widget, shows what to check after publishing and lists the usual reasons a bubble does not show up. It finishes with the first things to teach the assistant so the chat is useful from day one.
Before You Add Live Chat to Weebly
You need three things ready before opening the Weebly editor.
- A Talkmio account. The Free plan costs €0, needs no card and includes 1 operator, 1 website and 50 AI answers a month, which is enough to install, test and run a quiet site.
- Your install snippet. Sign in at app.talkmio.com, open Websites, add your Weebly domain and copy the snippet. It contains your site key, so each website you add gets a different one.
- Editor access to the Weebly site. You need to be able to open Settings and publish. On a site managed by someone else, ask for the login or send them this guide.
The snippet is a single script tag. It loads after your page content, so it does not delay what visitors see first. If your site is on Weebly’s free plan, custom code still works in the footer; only some paid features such as a custom domain are plan-gated, and the chat widget is not one of them. Weebly’s own help article on embed code describes the Embed Code element, and its support centre covers site settings in general.
Two Ways to Add Code in Weebly
Weebly accepts custom HTML and scripts in two places, and they behave differently.
| Method | Where | Applies to | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Footer code | Settings → SEO → Footer Code | Every page of the site | Chat widgets, analytics, verification tags |
| Header code | Settings → SEO → Header Code | Every page, loaded in the head | Meta tags, fonts, stylesheets |
| Embed Code element | Dragged onto one page from the Build panel | Only that page | Maps, forms, a widget on a single landing page |
| Page-level header code | Pages → page → Advanced | One page, in the head | Page-specific meta or tracking |
For a live chat widget you want the footer code. It runs on every page, including blog posts and store pages, and it loads at the end of the body, which is exactly where a chat script belongs. The Embed Code element is the wrong tool for site-wide chat because you would have to drop it on every page and keep each copy in sync.
Add Live Chat to Weebly Step by Step
Step 1: copy the Talkmio snippet
In the Talkmio app, open Websites, add your Weebly domain and copy the install snippet in full, from the opening angle bracket to the closing one. Copying only the address inside the tag will not load anything.
Step 2: open Settings → SEO in the Weebly editor
Open your site in the editor, click Settings in the top bar and choose SEO in the left-hand menu. Scroll down past the meta description field to the Header Code and Footer Code boxes.
Step 3: paste into Footer Code and save
Paste the snippet into Footer Code. If other snippets already live there, add the Talkmio tag on a new line below them, never inside another tag. Click Save at the bottom of the panel.
Step 4: publish
Settings changes in Weebly do not reach the live site until you publish. Click Publish in the top right of the editor and wait for the confirmation.
Step 5: test on the live site
Open your site address in a private browser window and wait a second or two. The chat bubble should sit in the corner you chose in Talkmio. Ask it a question your customers often ask. If it answers from your pages, you are live; if not, the knowledge base section below explains the next step.
What to Check After Publishing
- Every page type. Open the home page, a blog post, a store product and a contact page. The footer code should load on all of them.
- Mobile. Weebly sites are responsive, and so is the widget, but confirm the bubble does not cover a sticky footer button on a phone. Position can be changed in Websites → your site in Talkmio; changes apply within five minutes.
- Language. Mio replies in the visitor’s language, so test one question in a language your customers use besides your own.
- Hand-off. Ask for a person. The conversation should appear in your Inbox with a “needs human” badge and a browser notification. If nobody is online, you also get an e-mail and a push notification on the mobile app.
- Home checklist. Your Home page in Talkmio shows a checklist until everything is set, which is a quick way to see what is still missing.
For a general look at what the checks should look like on any platform, see our guide on how to add live chat to a website; the Weebly specifics above are the only differences.
Why the Chat Bubble Does Not Appear
Most “it does not work” reports on Weebly come down to one of these.
You have not published yet
The editor preview does not run footer code. Publish, then test the public address, not the editor.
The snippet landed in the wrong box
Header Code works too in most cases, but if the tag was pasted into the meta description or a page title field, it will show up as text instead of running. Check Settings → SEO and make sure the tag is in Footer Code.
A cached page
Your browser may still show the old version. Open a private window or hard-refresh. Weebly’s publish is usually visible within a minute.
The domain in Talkmio does not match
If you added “example.com” in Talkmio but your Weebly site answers at “example.weebly.com”, add the address visitors actually use. Each website in Talkmio has its own site key, so the snippet must come from the matching entry.
Two chat widgets fighting
If an earlier chat app is still installed from the Weebly App Center, two bubbles can overlap. Remove the old one before testing the new one.
Teach Mio Your Pages
Installing the widget takes minutes; making it useful takes the knowledge base. In Talkmio open Mio AI → Knowledge base and add your website. Mio reads every public page on the same domain, respecting robots.txt, and answers only from that content. You can also add single pages, Q&A pairs, free text and files in PDF, DOCX, TXT, MD, CSV or HTML up to 15 MB each. The Free plan keeps 20 knowledge-base pages, Pro 200 and Ultimate 1000.
Then write business instructions: what you sell, the tone to use and what Mio must never promise, for example “never quote delivery dates, hand order questions to the team”. Use Try Mio to ask the five questions your inbox sees most. You see each answer, the knowledge pieces behind it and how long it took. Our article on how to train an AI chatbot on your website content goes deeper on what to include and what to leave out.
When Mio cannot answer from your content, when a visitor asks for a person, complains or asks about a specific order, it hands over. Once a person replies, Mio stays out of that conversation. This matters on Weebly stores in particular, where order questions need a human with access to the order record.
Weebly Stores, Blogs and Multiple Sites
Weebly sites with a store get the same bubble on product and cart pages, because footer code applies to the whole site. Mio can answer shipping, returns and sizing questions from your policy pages if those pages are public. Blog posts also carry the widget, which is useful when a post draws questions about a service.
A practical tip for store owners: write your shipping, returns and payment information as plain pages rather than only as text inside the checkout, because Mio reads public pages and cannot see checkout screens. A short “Delivery and returns” page with the countries you ship to, the carriers you use, typical delivery times and the return window answers most pre-sale questions on its own. Re-read the source in the knowledge base after you change a policy so the answers stay current.
If you run several Weebly sites, each one needs its own entry under Websites in Talkmio and its own snippet. The Free plan covers one website, Pro three and Ultimate ten, with the full table on the pricing page. All sites share one Inbox, so a small team can answer for several brands from one screen.
Removing the Widget or Switching Sites
To remove the chat, delete the tag from Footer Code, save and publish again. Nothing else is left behind on the site. If you move from Weebly to another platform, the integrations page lists the install method for WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and others, and your Talkmio knowledge base, contacts and history carry over because they live in Talkmio, not in the website.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add live chat to Weebly on the free plan?
Yes. Weebly’s free plan allows custom code in Settings → SEO → Footer Code, and Talkmio’s Free plan costs €0 with no card, including 1 operator, 1 website and 50 AI answers a month. Paste the snippet, save, publish and the bubble appears on every page of the site.
Should I use Footer Code or the Embed Code element?
Use Footer Code. It applies to every page, including blog posts and store pages, and loads at the end of the body where a chat script belongs. The Embed Code element only affects the one page it sits on, so you would need to copy the snippet onto every page and keep them in sync.
Why does the chat not show in the Weebly editor?
The editor preview does not run footer scripts. Publish the site, then open your public address in a private browser window. The bubble should appear within a second or two. If it still does not, check that the tag is in Footer Code and not in a text field such as the meta description.
Does the widget slow down my Weebly site?
The Talkmio snippet is one script tag that loads after your page content, so visitors see the page first and the bubble a moment later. Remove any older chat app from the App Center before installing, because two widgets loading at once add weight and can overlap on the page.
Will Mio answer questions about orders in my Weebly store?
Mio answers from your public pages, so shipping, returns and sizing policies are fair game if they are published. Questions about a specific order are handed to your team with the full chat history, because Mio has no access to Weebly order records and never guesses about an order’s status.
How do I change the bubble’s colour, position or language?
In Talkmio open Websites and choose your site. You can set the colour, position, assistant name, welcome and offline texts, pre-chat form, language (auto-detect or fixed) and business hours. Changes apply within five minutes and need no new publish on the Weebly side, because the snippet stays the same.
The Bottom Line
To add live chat to Weebly, copy your Talkmio snippet, paste it into Settings → SEO → Footer Code, save and publish, then test on the live address rather than in the editor. Spend the next half hour on the knowledge base and business instructions, because the quality of the answers decides whether visitors keep using the chat. Create a free Talkmio account, install the snippet on your Weebly site and ask Mio your most common customer question today.
