To add live chat to Drupal, install a small module, paste your site key into its settings page and clear the caches. The chat bubble then appears on every public page, and no theme editing is needed. Talkmio ships a dedicated module for Drupal 10 and 11, and there is a plain snippet route for anything else. This guide walks through both, explains what to check after installation, and covers the problems Drupal sites usually run into: caching, themes, multilingual setups and administrator pages.
The steps use Talkmio as the example because it has a ready-made module, but the logic applies to most chat widgets.
What You Need Before You Start
Preparation takes a few minutes and avoids most of the trouble later.
- Administrator access to a Drupal 10 or 11 site, with permission to install modules.
- A Talkmio account and a site key. Sign in at app.talkmio.com, open Websites, add your website and copy the 12-character key. The free plan needs no card.
- A recent backup of the database and files. A small module is low risk, but a backup is good practice before any extension change.
- A place to test. If you have a staging copy of the site, install there first.
If you run Drupal 9 or older, upgrade first. Those versions no longer receive security updates, and the module is built for 10 and 11. For a quick manual test on an older site, the snippet method below still works.
Method 1: Add Live Chat to Drupal With the Module
The module adds the widget to every non-admin page and identifies logged-in users, so your team sees who is writing when a signed-in visitor starts a chat.
Step 1: Download the module
Open the Drupal page in the Talkmio integrations section and download the ZIP file, named talkmio-drupal-1.0.0.zip at the time of writing. Keep the file as it is; do not unpack it on your computer unless you plan to upload by FTP.
Step 2: Put it in the modules folder
You have two options. Unzip the package into modules/custom/talkmio/ on the server, by SSH or FTP. Or, if your site allows installing modules from the interface, go to Extend, choose Add new module and upload the ZIP. The upload route depends on the core Update Manager module being enabled; if you do not see the option, use the folder method.
Step 3: Enable the module
Go to Extend, find “Talkmio – AI Live Chat” in the list and tick it, then press Install. If you manage modules with Drush, the machine name is the folder name, so the command is a normal module install for that name.
Step 4: Paste the site key
Open Configuration, then Web services, then Talkmio. Paste the 12-character site key and save. That is the whole configuration.
Step 5: Clear the caches
Drupal caches rendered pages aggressively. Go to Configuration, Development, Performance and clear all caches, or run a cache rebuild with Drush. If the bubble does not show after this, the cause is almost always a cache, which the troubleshooting section below covers.
Method 2: Paste the Snippet Into Your Theme
If you cannot install a module, for example on a locked-down hosting plan or an older Drupal version, the widget is a single script tag. Copy it from Websites in the Talkmio app and place it before the closing body tag of your page template. In a custom or sub-theme this usually means the page.html.twig or html.html.twig file. Clear the caches afterwards so the new template is used.
The snippet works, but it comes with two drawbacks. It does not identify logged-in users, and it lives in your theme, so a theme change or a switch to a new base theme can remove it without anyone noticing. A module survives theme changes.
Module vs Snippet: Which Should You Use
| Question | Module | Template snippet |
|---|---|---|
| Needs a developer | No | Sometimes |
| Survives theme changes | Yes | No, it is part of the theme |
| Identifies logged-in users | Yes | No |
| Works on Drupal 10 and 11 | Yes | Yes, and on older versions |
| Skips administration pages | Yes, by design | Depends on the template used |
| Where the key is stored | Module settings page | Inside the template file |
| Best for | Most sites | Restricted hosting, quick tests |
For most sites the module is the better choice. Use the snippet when you cannot install anything, and note in your documentation where it lives.
Test the Chat Before You Announce It
Do not trust the bubble alone. Open the site in a private browser window, where you are not logged in and no admin toolbar interferes, and run a short test.
- Confirm the bubble appears on the home page, a node page, a taxonomy listing and a Views page.
- Ask Mio two or three questions your customers really ask, such as delivery times, a return rule or an opening hour.
- Check that each answer comes from your own pages. If something is missing, add it to your site or to the Talkmio knowledge base and ask again.
- Ask for a person. The conversation should appear in the Talkmio Inbox with a “needs human” badge.
- Repeat on a phone. Check that the bubble does not cover a cookie banner, a sticky “Add to cart” bar or a Drupal Commerce checkout button.
Our guide to where to place the chat widget explains how to choose a corner that does not collide with other page elements.
Teach the Assistant Your Drupal Content
The chat is only as useful as the content behind it. Talkmio’s assistant, Mio, reads your website, FAQ and uploaded documents and answers only from them. In Mio AI, open the knowledge base and add your website; Mio reads every public page on the same domain and respects robots.txt. You can also add single pages, question and answer pairs, free text, or files such as PDF, DOCX, TXT, MD, CSV and HTML up to 15 MB each.
A few Drupal-specific habits help:
- Publish clean text pages. Content that exists only in a Views block, a carousel or a PDF behind a login is invisible to a crawler. Put policies and prices in plain pages.
- Mind unpublished content. Mio reads public pages only. Draft nodes and role-restricted content are not part of its knowledge unless you add them as text or files.
- Write business instructions. Tell Mio what you sell, the tone to use and what it must never promise, for example “never quote delivery dates, hand order questions to the team”.
- Re-read after big changes. After a content migration or a new price list, use Re-read so the knowledge is current.
Use the “Try Mio” tool to test answers before going live: it shows the answer, the knowledge pieces used and how long it took. Our guide to training an AI chatbot on your website content goes deeper on structure and wording.
Customise the Widget
In the Talkmio app, open Websites and choose your site. You can set the colour, position, assistant name, welcome and offline texts, a pre-chat form (none, optional or required), the language (auto-detect or fixed) and business hours. Changes apply within five minutes, with no change to Drupal itself, so editors can adjust welcome texts without touching the module.
On a multilingual Drupal site, leave the language on auto-detect. Mio replies in the language the visitor writes in, and the chat window is translated as well. For better replies, translate your most important pages, such as shipping, returns and contact, because Mio finds answers across languages but reads more naturally from pages in the visitor’s own language.
Drupal-Specific Tips
Caching and the Internal Page Cache
Because the widget loads from a script tag, it works with the Internal Page Cache and with reverse proxies such as Varnish or a CDN. What can go wrong is an old cached copy of a page that was rendered before you enabled the module. Clear caches in Drupal, then the CDN, then your browser.
Logged-in users and privacy
Because the module identifies signed-in users, your team can see who they are talking to. Mention this in your privacy policy, and think about which user fields you really need. Our guide to a live chat privacy policy lists what to cover. Identification is for context only; it does not replace checking identity before you discuss an order, see live chat identity verification.
Administration pages
The module skips administration pages, so editors do not see the bubble while working in the back end. If you cannot find it while logged in as administrator, test on a public page or in a private window.
Drupal Commerce and other add-ons
On a shop built with Drupal Commerce, test the cart and checkout pages on mobile, where a chat bubble can overlap a primary button. The chat should help at checkout, not block it. If a page builder or a headless front end renders pages outside Drupal’s theme layer, use the snippet in that front end instead.
Staging and production
Create a separate website in Talkmio for staging, with its own site key, so test conversations do not mix with real ones. Remember that a database copied from production to staging also copies the saved site key; change it after each sync.
Troubleshooting
The bubble does not appear
Check, in this order: the module is enabled; the site key is saved without spaces; the caches are cleared; you are viewing a public page rather than an admin page; and an ad blocker or a strict browser setting is not hiding the widget. Viewing the page source and searching for “talkmio” tells you quickly whether the script is on the page.
It appears twice
You probably installed both the module and the snippet. Remove one. Also check that a tag manager is not loading it a third time.
It shows on some pages only
This is typically a theme with a custom template that omits the standard footer region, or a landing page built outside the normal page layout. Test one affected page, then check which template it uses.
The page feels slower
The widget loads asynchronously, so it should not block rendering. If you see a slowdown, compare with and without it, and read our guide to chat widget page speed.
What Happens After Installation
Visitors can write at any time. Mio answers from your content in their language and hands the conversation to your team when it cannot answer, when the visitor asks for a person, complains, or asks about a specific order. The conversation gets a “needs human” badge, you receive a browser notification, and if nobody is online an e-mail and a push notification on the mobile app follow. Once a person replies, Mio stays out of that conversation. Operators reply from the Inbox, can use quick replies with a slash, add internal notes, and turn any conversation into a numbered ticket.
The free plan covers one operator, one website and 50 AI answers a month. Pro costs €19 a month and adds three operators, three websites, 1,000 AI answers and the e-mail channel. See pricing for the full list. The general guide to adding live chat to any website covers other platforms.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add live chat to Drupal?
Download the Talkmio module ZIP, unzip it into modules/custom/talkmio or upload it under Extend, enable “Talkmio – AI Live Chat”, then paste your 12-character site key under Configuration, Web services, Talkmio. Save, clear the caches and open a public page in a private window to see the chat bubble.
Which Drupal versions does the Talkmio module support?
The module is built for Drupal 10 and 11. On older versions, use the single script tag instead: paste it before the closing body tag in your page template and clear the caches. Drupal 9 and earlier no longer receive security updates, so plan an upgrade rather than relying on the snippet long term.
Does the chat bubble show in the Drupal administration area?
No. The module adds the widget to every non-admin page, so editors are not distracted while working in the back end. To check that it works, open a public page, ideally in a private browser window where you are not logged in and no administrative toolbar is present.
Why is the chat not visible after I enabled the module?
Usually a cache. Clear all caches under Configuration, Development, Performance, then clear your CDN and browser cache. Also confirm the site key is saved correctly, you are not on an admin page and no ad blocker hides the widget. Searching the page source for “talkmio” shows whether the script is present.
Does the module identify logged-in Drupal users?
Yes, the module identifies signed-in users, so your team can see who is writing. Mention this in your privacy policy and still verify identity through your normal process before discussing orders or account details. The snippet method does not identify users.
Is Talkmio free for a Drupal site?
Yes, there is a free plan with one operator, one website and 50 AI answers a month, and no card is needed. Paid plans add operators, websites, AI answers, the e-mail channel and more. Check the pricing page for current plans before you decide.
The Bottom Line
To add live chat to Drupal, install the module, paste your site key, clear the caches and test on a public page in a private window. Use the snippet only when you cannot install modules. Then spend your time on what makes the chat valuable: clear public pages, sensible business instructions and a quick check of the first answers. When you are ready, create a free Talkmio account, copy your site key and have the chat running on your Drupal site today.
