How to Add Live Chat to Blogger: HTML Gadget Setup

Add live chat to Blogger: an HTML/JavaScript gadget in the Layout footer holding the Talkmio script

To add live chat to Blogger, open your blog’s Layout, add an HTML/JavaScript gadget, paste one script tag from Talkmio and save the arrangement. The chat bubble then appears on your blogspot.com or custom-domain blog, and Mio, the AI assistant, starts answering readers from your own posts and pages while you handle the questions that need a person. No plugin, no theme developer and no new hosting are needed.

This guide gives the gadget method and the theme method, explains which to use, shows what to test after saving and lists the usual reasons a bubble does not appear. It also covers something specific to blogs: how an assistant should treat hundreds of posts, because a blog is a different kind of knowledge base from a shop or a services site.

Before You Add Live Chat to Blogger

Prepare three things first.

  • A Talkmio account. The Free plan costs €0, needs no card and includes 1 operator, 1 website and 50 AI answers a month, enough to install and test on a small blog.
  • Your install snippet. Sign in at app.talkmio.com, open Websites, add your blog address and copy the snippet. It is a single script tag whose source ends with your 12-character site key.
  • Admin access to the blog. You need to be able to open Layout or Theme. If a co-author owns the blog, ask for admin rights or send them this guide.

The script loads asynchronously, so it does not hold back your post text. Google’s Blogger Help covers the dashboard in general, and the page on widget tags for layouts explains how gadgets and theme code relate.

Two Ways to Add Live Chat to Blogger

Blogger accepts custom code in two places. Both work; they differ in risk and reach.

Method Where Applies to Risk Best for
HTML/JavaScript gadget Layout, Add a Gadget, HTML/JavaScript Every page that shows the area where the gadget sits Low: easy to remove Most blogs
Theme HTML Theme, Customize, Edit HTML, before the closing body tag Every page the theme renders Higher: a typo in theme code can break the layout People who already edit their theme

For a chat widget the gadget is the better first choice. It is visual, it can be moved or deleted in two clicks and it does not touch your theme. The theme method is useful when the footer area is not shown on every page of your template, or when you prefer code in one place.

Add Live Chat to Blogger With an HTML Gadget

Step 1: copy the Talkmio snippet

In Talkmio open Websites, add your blog and copy the full script tag. Copy the whole tag from the opening angle bracket to the closing one, not only the key.

Step 2: open Layout

In the Blogger dashboard choose your blog and open Layout. Look for a footer section; a gadget in the footer is the usual place because the widget draws its own floating bubble and does not need visible space in your design.

Step 3: add the gadget

Click Add a Gadget, choose HTML/JavaScript and leave the title empty if you do not want a heading above it. Paste the Talkmio script tag into the content box.

Step 4: save

Click Save in the gadget window and then Save arrangement on the Layout page. Without the second save the gadget exists in the editor but not on the live blog.

Step 5: test the public blog

Open the public address in a private browser window and wait a second or two. The bubble should appear in the corner you chose in Talkmio. Ask a question that one of your posts answers and check the reply against the post. The guide on how to add live chat to a website lists the same checks for any platform.

The Theme Method: Edit HTML

If you prefer the theme route, open Theme, then Customize and Edit HTML. Find the closing body tag, paste the same script on the line right before it and save. Two precautions apply. First, download a backup of the theme before editing; Blogger offers a backup option in the Theme menu. Second, change nothing else, because a stray character in theme code can break the layout of every page. If the blog looks wrong after saving, restore the backup and use the gadget method instead.

Do not use both methods. Two copies of the script are a source of confusion: you remove one later and the chat stays because the other is still there.

What a Blog Means for the Knowledge Base

Blogs hold a lot of text. In Talkmio open Mio AI, then Knowledge base, and add your blog address. Mio reads every public page on the same domain, respecting robots.txt, and answers only from that content. That is a strength for a blog: a reader who asks a question that you answered in a post three years ago gets the answer without you searching for it.

Mind the page limit

The plan limits how many pages Mio can keep: 20 knowledge-base pages on Free, 200 on Pro and 1000 on Ultimate. A blog with hundreds of posts will exceed the Free allowance, so choose deliberately. Add the posts and pages that carry your most useful answers, such as a “start here” page, the FAQ, product reviews you get questions about and any page with prices, policies or contact details. Add single pages and Q&A pairs instead of the whole archive if you are on a small plan.

Write a few Q&A pairs for what posts do not say

Readers often ask things a post never answered: how to contact you, whether you accept guest posts, where to buy something you reviewed, whether a review is still current. Short Q&A pairs close those gaps. Business instructions then set the voice: your blog’s tone, what Mio must never promise (for example “never recommend a product I have not reviewed”) and when to hand over to you.

Use Try Mio before readers do

Try Mio shows the answer, the knowledge pieces used and the time it took. Ask five real reader questions and edit the sources until the answers are right. Our piece on how to train an AI chatbot on your website content shows what to include.

Who Benefits From Chat on a Blogger Blog

  • Small businesses on blogspot. A local shop or service that uses a Blogger site as its main page gets pre-sales questions answered at once.
  • Review and affiliate blogs. Readers ask which option fits them. Mio can answer from your reviews and hand over the nuanced cases.
  • Tutorial and hobby blogs. Readers get stuck on step four; an assistant finds the relevant post.
  • Community and club blogs. Event dates, membership and contacts are repeated questions.

Chat also gives you something comments do not: you see readers’ real questions. The article on live chat on blog posts explains how to turn those into leads and new content, and Live visitors shows which page each reader is on and where they came from.

Widget Settings Worth Changing on a Blog

The default widget works, but a blog benefits from a few changes under Websites in Talkmio. Set the colour to match your header so the bubble looks like part of the blog. Choose a position that avoids the corner where your theme puts a back-to-top button or a cookie banner. Write a welcome text that sounds like you, for example an invitation to ask about a post or a product you reviewed, rather than a generic greeting. Pick the pre-chat form setting carefully: none keeps the chat frictionless for casual readers, while an optional e-mail field helps you follow up when you are offline. Changes apply within five minutes and need nothing from Blogger, because the script stays the same.

If your blog shows a consent banner for readers in Europe, check how it treats third-party scripts, and mention the chat in your privacy page. Talkmio stores data on servers in the EU (Germany), and you can export or delete conversations at any time by writing to support.

What to Check After Saving

  • Posts, static pages and the home page. Open each type. A gadget in a footer area normally shows on all of them, but confirm.
  • Phone layout. Some Blogger themes render a different mobile layout. Open a post on a phone and check that the bubble does not cover a button or the comment box. Position is set under Websites in Talkmio and changes apply within five minutes.
  • Speed. One asynchronous script is light; see live chat widget page speed if you run several third-party widgets.
  • Hand-off. Ask for a person. The chat should appear in your Inbox with a “needs human” badge and a browser notification; when nobody is online you also get an e-mail and a push notification on the mobile app.
  • Offline behaviour. When your team is offline, visitors are asked for an e-mail before their first message and your reply goes out as an e-mail. Set business hours and offline text under Websites.

Why the Bubble Does Not Show Up on Blogger

You did not save the arrangement

The gadget needs both Save steps. Reopen Layout and check that the gadget is listed in the footer.

The gadget area is not shown on every page

Some templates hide certain sections on posts or on mobile. Move the gadget to another section or use the theme method.

The script was pasted as text

If the tag shows up as visible text, it was put in a title or a text gadget rather than HTML/JavaScript. Use the HTML/JavaScript gadget type.

The domain in Talkmio does not match

If your blog answers at example.blogspot.com but you added a custom domain in Talkmio, use the entry that matches what readers visit.

Cached page or blocker

Test in a private window with content blockers off, because some blockers hide chat widgets.

Moving Beyond Blogger Later

Many blogs move to WordPress when they grow. The same Talkmio account follows: install the WordPress plugin with your site key, and your knowledge base, contacts and history stay in Talkmio. To remove the chat from Blogger, delete the gadget (or the line in the theme), save and check the live page; nothing else is left behind. Plans and limits are on the pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I paste the chat code in Blogger?

Open Layout, click Add a Gadget, choose HTML/JavaScript and paste the Talkmio script tag, preferably in a footer section. Click Save in the gadget window and then Save arrangement on the Layout page. The alternative is Theme, Customize, Edit HTML, pasting the same line right before the closing body tag.

Is the gadget method or the theme method better?

Use the gadget method first. It is visual, does not touch theme code and can be removed in two clicks. Use the theme method only if the footer section is not shown on every page of your template or you already edit theme code, and download a theme backup before changing anything.

Will Mio read all the posts on my Blogger blog?

Mio reads every public page on the same domain, respecting robots.txt, but the plan limits how many pages it keeps: 20 on Free, 200 on Pro and 1000 on Ultimate. On a large blog, add the most useful posts, a start-here page and Q&A pairs for common questions rather than the whole archive.

Does live chat work on a blogspot.com address and a custom domain?

Yes. The widget is one script tag, so it works on a blogspot.com address and on a custom domain. Add in Talkmio the address that readers actually visit, so the site key and the Inbox match. Each website has its own key, and all share one Inbox.

Why does my Blogger blog not show the chat bubble?

The usual causes are forgetting Save arrangement, pasting the tag into a text gadget so it shows as text, placing it in a section the template hides on some pages or testing with a content blocker on. Check Layout, use an HTML/JavaScript gadget and test the public address in a private window.

Can I use the free Talkmio plan on a hobby blog?

Yes. The Free plan costs €0, needs no card and includes 1 operator, 1 website, 50 AI answers a month and 20 knowledge-base pages. That suits a small blog. If readers ask more than 50 questions a month or you need more pages, Pro adds 1000 AI answers, 200 pages and three operators.

The Bottom Line

To add live chat to Blogger, paste your Talkmio script into an HTML/JavaScript gadget, save the arrangement and test on the public blog; use the theme method only if you are comfortable editing theme code. Then spend your time on the knowledge base, choosing the posts that answer the questions readers actually ask. Create a free Talkmio account, add the gadget today and see what your readers want to know.
