How to Add Live Chat to a Carrd Site (Embed Element)

Add live chat to Carrd: a hidden Code embed holding the Talkmio script on a one-page site

To add live chat to Carrd, drop an Embed element onto your page, set its type to Code and its style to Hidden, paste one script tag from Talkmio and publish. The chat bubble then appears on your one-page site, and Mio, the AI assistant, starts answering visitors from your own content while your team picks up whatever needs a person. The job takes a few minutes and needs no developer, no plugin and no extra hosting.

This guide covers what you need before you start, the exact steps in the Carrd editor, what to put into the knowledge base when your whole site is a single page, how to test the result and what usually goes wrong. Carrd sites are small by design, so a few choices that do not matter on a large website matter a lot here.

Before You Add Live Chat to Carrd

Three things have to be in place before you open the editor.

  • A Carrd Pro plan. Embeds are a Pro feature. Carrd’s Pro page lists “Widgets + Embeds” next to custom domains and forms, and says Pro starts from $19 a year at the time of writing. On a free Carrd site the Embed element is not available, so the script cannot be added.
  • A Talkmio account and site key. Create a free account at app.talkmio.com, open Websites, add your Carrd address and copy the 12-character site key or the full snippet. The Free plan costs €0, needs no card and includes 1 operator, 1 website and 50 AI answers a month.
  • The final address of the site. If you plan to move from a carrd.co address to your own domain, add the address you will keep, so the Inbox shows the site visitors really see.

The snippet is a single script tag that loads asynchronously, so it does not hold up the rest of the page. Carrd’s own documentation explains the editor, elements and publishing in general; the only Carrd-specific part you need here is the Embed element.

How Carrd Differs From a Normal Website

Most chat installs assume a website with many pages and a footer template. Carrd works differently, and the differences decide how you set up the assistant.

Carrd setup What it means for live chat What to do
One-page site One snippet covers the entire site, and Mio has only that page to read Put prices, hours, policies and FAQ on the page, or add them to the knowledge base as Q&A pairs
Several Carrd sites in one account Each site is separate and needs its own embed Add each address under Websites in Talkmio with its own site key
Custom domain Visitors see your domain, not carrd.co Add the custom domain to Talkmio so the Inbox shows the right site
Free carrd.co address No Embed element, so no chat snippet Upgrade to Pro or link to a page that can host the widget
Contact form on the page Form and chat can sit side by side Keep the form for long requests, use chat for quick questions

The practical point is the first row. Mio reads public pages on the same domain and answers only from that content. A one-page site gives it one page, so anything that is not written on the page, or added to the knowledge base by hand, will not be answered and will be handed to your team instead. That is a safe default, but it makes the chat feel thin unless you feed it.

Add Live Chat to Carrd Step by Step

Step 1: copy your Talkmio snippet

In the Talkmio app go to Websites, add your Carrd site and copy the snippet. It has the form of a script tag whose source ends with your site key. Copy the whole tag, not just the key.

Step 2: open the site in the Carrd editor

Sign in to Carrd, open the site and choose where to place the element. The position inside the layout does not matter for a hidden embed, because it draws nothing on the page; the chat bubble is added by the script in the corner you choose in Talkmio. Putting it near the bottom keeps the editor tidy.

Step 3: add an Embed element

Click the add button, choose Embed and place it anywhere on the page. In its settings set Type to Code and Style to Hidden. Hidden matters: a visible code embed reserves space in the layout, while a hidden one stays out of the way.

Step 4: paste the script and confirm

Paste the Talkmio script tag into the code field, press Done and then Publish. Judge the result on the published page, not in the editor.

Step 5: test the live address

Open your published address in a private browser window. After a second or two the chat bubble should appear in the corner. Ask Mio a question that your page answers, such as what you offer or how to book, and check that the reply matches the page. Our guide on how to add live chat to a website lists the same checks for any platform.

What Mio Can Answer From a One-Page Site

A typical Carrd page has a headline, a few sections, a pricing block and a contact form. That is enough for the basic questions, but visitors ask more than a landing page says. Plan the knowledge base around the questions you actually get.

Write the answers once, in the Knowledge base

In Talkmio open Mio AI, then Knowledge base. Besides the website itself you can add Q&A pairs, free text and files in PDF, DOCX, TXT, MD, CSV or HTML up to 15 MB. For a Carrd site, the most useful additions are short Q&A pairs for the things the page does not spell out: delivery or turnaround time, refund terms, what happens after booking, which payment methods you accept, which countries you serve. Each pair is one knowledge piece, and the Free plan keeps up to 20 knowledge-base pages, Pro 200 and Ultimate 1000.

Use business instructions for tone and limits

Business instructions tell Mio what you sell, the tone to use and what it must never promise. For a small personal brand or a freelancer’s page, a short instruction works well: who you are, the services you sell, that you answer within one working day and that Mio should not quote prices that are not on the page. Our article on AI chatbot instructions shows how to word rules the assistant follows.

Test with Try Mio before publishing changes

Try Mio shows the answer, the knowledge pieces used and the time it took. Ask your five most common questions there. If an answer is missing, add a Q&A pair and ask again. The page how to train an AI chatbot on your website content goes deeper on what to include.

Who Uses Live Chat on a Carrd Site

Carrd is popular for single-purpose pages, and chat fits some of them better than others.

  • Freelancers and consultants. A portfolio or services page where prospects want to know availability, rates and process before writing. Chat catches the visitor who would not fill in a form.
  • Product and app landing pages. Pre-launch or small-product pages where questions are about price, platform and release date.
  • Event and booking pages. Dates, venue, tickets and what to bring are repeated questions that an assistant answers well.
  • Link-in-bio pages. Visitors arriving from social media often have one quick question. Live visitors in Talkmio shows the source, so you can see how many came from which network.
  • Local businesses with a simple site. Opening hours, location and services on one page, which is exactly what a hidden embed and a few Q&A pairs can serve.

If your page already has a contact form, keep it. The comparison in live chat vs contact form explains why the two work well together: the form for long or private requests, the chat for the quick question that would otherwise be lost.

What to Check After Publishing

  • Mobile layout. Carrd pages are responsive, and so is the widget. Open the page on a phone and confirm the bubble does not cover a sticky button or form field. Position can be changed under Websites in Talkmio; changes apply within five minutes without touching Carrd.
  • Language. Mio replies in the visitor’s language, and the widget itself is translated. Ask one question in a second language your audience uses.
  • Hand-off. Ask for a person. The conversation should appear in your Inbox with a “needs human” badge and a browser notification. If nobody is online, you also get an e-mail and a push notification on the mobile app.
  • Business hours. Set hours and offline text under Websites. When your whole team is offline, visitors are asked for an e-mail before their first message, and your reply from the Inbox goes out as an e-mail.
  • Home checklist. Your Home page in Talkmio shows a checklist until everything is set, which is the quickest way to see what is left.

Why the Chat Bubble Does Not Show Up

The site is not on a Pro plan

The Embed element needs Carrd Pro. If you cannot find it in the element menu, check the plan first.

The embed is not set to Code

If Type is set to anything other than Code, the script is treated as something else and never runs. Set Type to Code and Style to Hidden.

You did not publish

Changes in the editor are not live until you publish. Publish again after any edit and test the public address.

The domain in Talkmio does not match

If you added “example.com” in Talkmio but the site answers at a carrd.co address, add the address visitors actually use. Each website in Talkmio has its own key, so the script must come from the entry that matches.

Cached page or a blocker

Use a private window and disable content blockers for the test. Some blockers hide chat widgets, so test with a clean browser profile before assuming the install failed.

Several Carrd Sites and Growing Later

A Carrd account can hold several sites (Carrd’s Pro page says more than three needs a paid plan), and many people run a separate page per product or per campaign. In Talkmio each site is a separate entry under Websites with its own key, and all of them share one Inbox, so a one-person team can answer for several pages from one screen. The Free plan covers one website, Pro three and Ultimate ten, with the full table on the pricing page.

If the single page outgrows Carrd and you move to WordPress, Webflow or a store, the same Talkmio account follows you. The integrations page lists the install method for each platform, and your knowledge base, contacts and chat history stay in Talkmio, not in the website. To remove the chat from Carrd, delete the Embed element and publish again; nothing else is left behind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add live chat to Carrd on the free plan?

No, not through an Embed element. Carrd offers embeds only on Pro plans, which its Pro page lists as Widgets and Embeds. Talkmio itself has a free plan at €0, but the script has to be added to the page, so a free Carrd site cannot host it. Upgrade the Carrd site to Pro, then paste the snippet into a hidden Code embed.

Which Embed settings should I use for the chat script?

Set Type to Code and Style to Hidden, paste the Talkmio script tag, press Done and publish. A hidden code embed draws nothing in the layout, so it can sit anywhere on the page, and the chat bubble is added by the script in the corner you choose in Talkmio. A visible embed would only reserve empty space.

Will Mio know enough from a one-page Carrd site?

Mio answers only from your content, so it knows what is written on the page and what you add to the knowledge base. For a one-page site, add short Q&A pairs covering prices, turnaround, refunds and booking steps. Anything missing is handed to your team instead of guessed, which keeps answers accurate but makes the chat thin without extra input.

Does the chat widget slow down my Carrd page?

The Talkmio snippet is one script tag loaded asynchronously, so visitors see your page first and the bubble a moment later. Carrd pages are light, and a single script has little effect. If you run other embeds, test the page on a phone after publishing and remove any older chat widget so two bubbles do not overlap.

Do I need a separate key for each Carrd site?

Yes. Each website in Talkmio has its own site key, and each Carrd site needs the script that matches its entry. Add every site under Websites, copy its own snippet and paste it into that site’s embed. All sites share one Inbox. The Free plan covers one website, Pro three and Ultimate ten.

How do I remove or move the chat later?

Delete the Embed element in Carrd and publish again; the bubble disappears and nothing else remains on the site. If you move to another platform, install the Talkmio snippet there with the same account. Your knowledge base, contacts and conversation history live in Talkmio, so they carry over to the new site.

The Bottom Line

To add live chat to Carrd, use a Pro plan, add a hidden Code embed, paste your Talkmio script and publish, then test on the live address rather than the editor. Because a Carrd site is one page, spend the time you save on the knowledge base: a dozen short Q&A pairs turn a thin page into a chat that answers real questions. Create a free Talkmio account, paste the snippet into your Carrd site and ask Mio the question your visitors ask most.
