How to Add Live Chat to Joomla 4 and 5

Add live chat to Joomla with the system plugin settings and site key field

The quickest way to add live chat to Joomla is a system plugin: upload a ZIP in the Joomla administrator, paste your site key, enable the plugin and the chat bubble appears on every page. No template edits, no developer. This guide walks through the full process for Joomla 4 and 5, the manual alternative with a template snippet, how to test it, and the problems people usually hit.

We use Talkmio as the example because it has a dedicated Joomla plugin, but the principles apply to most chat widgets.

Before You Start

You need three things:

  • Administrator access to your Joomla site, with permission to install extensions.
  • A Joomla 4 or 5 site. Talkmio’s plugin is built for these versions. If you still run Joomla 3, use the manual snippet method described below, and plan an upgrade, since Joomla 3 no longer receives security updates.
  • A chat account and site key. Sign in at app.talkmio.com, go to Websites, add your website and copy the 12-character site key. A free account needs no card.

It also helps to have a recent backup. Installing a small plugin is low risk, but a backup is good practice before any extension change. The official Joomla project site links to documentation for backups and extension management.

Method 1: Add Live Chat to Joomla With the Plugin

Step 1: Download the plugin

Open the Talkmio Joomla integration page and download the plugin package, plg_system_talkmio-1.0.0.zip. Keep the ZIP as it is; Joomla installs it directly.

Step 2: Install the package

  1. Log in to the Joomla administrator.
  2. Go to System → Install → Extensions.
  3. Open the Upload Package File tab and choose the ZIP, or drag it onto the upload area.
  4. Wait for the “Installation of the plugin was successful” message.

Step 3: Configure and enable it

  1. Go to System → Manage → Plugins.
  2. Search for “Talkmio” and open System – Talkmio AI Live Chat.
  3. Paste your site key.
  4. Set Status to Enabled and click Save.

Because it is a system plugin, it loads on every page of the site, regardless of which template, menu item or component the page uses. It also identifies logged-in users, so when a registered member of your site starts a chat, your team sees who they are instead of an anonymous visitor.

Step 4: Clear the cache

If you use Joomla’s page cache or a caching extension, clear it under System → Maintenance → Clear Cache. Otherwise visitors may be served cached pages without the widget for a while. Do the same for any CDN or server-side cache in front of the site.

Method 2: Paste the Snippet Into Your Template

If you cannot install extensions, or you run an older version, you can add the install snippet that Talkmio shows when you add your website. It must go just before </body> on every page.

  1. Go to System → Site Templates and open your template’s Details and Files.
  2. Open index.php.
  3. Paste the snippet immediately before </body> and save.

Two cautions. First, editing a core template such as Cassiopeia directly means a Joomla update can overwrite your change. Joomla 4.1 and later support child templates; create a child of Cassiopeia and edit that instead. Second, a Custom module with the snippet inside often fails, because editors strip script tags by default. The plugin avoids both problems, so prefer it when you can.

Plugin vs Snippet: Which to Use

Question System plugin Template snippet
Joomla versions 4 and 5 Any, including 3
Code editing needed No Yes, in index.php
Survives template updates Yes Only in a child or custom template
Works when you switch templates Yes No, must be added again
Identifies logged-in users Yes No
Turn off without editing code Yes, disable the plugin No, remove the code

Teach the Assistant Your Content

Installing the widget is half the job. The other half is making sure the chat gives good answers. Talkmio’s assistant, Mio, answers only from your own content, so give it something to read:

  • Your website. In Mio AI → Knowledge base, add your site. Mio reads every public page on the same domain, respecting robots.txt.
  • Documents. Upload PDFs, DOCX, TXT, MD, CSV or HTML files up to 15 MB: price lists, terms, product sheets.
  • Q&A pairs and free text. Add answers to questions your pages do not cover well.
  • Business instructions. Tell Mio what you sell, the tone to use and what it must never promise.

Joomla sites often keep important information in articles that are not linked from the main menu, or in components such as a documents library. If a page is public and on your domain it can be read; if information sits behind a login, upload it as a file or add a Q&A pair. Our guide to training an AI chatbot on your website content covers this in more depth.

Test Before You Announce It

  1. Open your site in a private browser window, so you see what a new visitor sees.
  2. Check the chat bubble appears on the home page, an article page and a component page such as contact or a shop.
  3. Ask two or three questions customers really ask. Check that each answer comes from your own pages.
  4. Ask for a person. The conversation should appear in the Talkmio Inbox with a “needs human” badge.
  5. Test on a phone. Make sure the bubble does not cover your template’s mobile menu, cookie banner or a back-to-top button.

Use Try Mio in the Talkmio app as well: it shows the answer, which knowledge pieces were used and how long it took, which makes it easy to spot missing content.

Customise the Widget

In Talkmio, open Websites and select your site to set the colour, position, assistant name, welcome and offline texts, pre-chat form (none, optional or required), language (auto-detect or fixed) and business hours. Changes apply within five minutes, without touching Joomla. Match the colour to your template’s accent colour, and if your template has a fixed element in the bottom right corner, move the bubble to the left. Our guide to widget placement and proactive messages has more layout advice.

Multilingual Joomla sites are common. You can leave the language on auto-detect so the widget follows the visitor, and Mio replies in the language the visitor writes in, whichever language version of the site they are on.

Joomla-Specific Tips

Access levels and registered-only content

Joomla lets you restrict articles to Registered, Special or custom access levels. The assistant reads public pages only, so content shown to members is not in its knowledge unless you add it another way. If members ask questions about that content, export the key articles as PDF or text and upload them, or write Q&A pairs. Think about whether that information should be visible to anonymous visitors in chat at all; if not, leave it out and let the team answer.

Components and extensions

Many Joomla sites run a shop, booking or membership component. The chat cannot see a visitor’s orders or bookings in those components, so questions such as “Where is my order?” or “Is my booking confirmed?” should go to a person. Say so in the business instructions: “Hand order, booking and account questions to the team.”

Site offline mode

When the site is in offline mode during maintenance, visitors see the offline page instead of your template, so the chat bubble will not appear for them. That is usually fine. If you run long maintenance windows, mention another contact route on the offline page.

Staging copies

If you test on a staging copy of the site, add the staging domain as a separate website in Talkmio, or disable the plugin there, so test chats do not mix with real ones in your Inbox.

Troubleshooting

The bubble does not appear

  • Check the plugin status is Enabled and the site key is pasted without spaces.
  • Clear Joomla’s cache and any CDN or server cache, then reload in a private window.
  • Make sure the website in Talkmio matches the domain you are testing, including www or non-www.
  • Check your browser console for blocked scripts. A strict Content Security Policy, set by a security extension or the server, may need the chat script’s domain added.

It appears twice

You probably installed the plugin and also left a snippet in the template or a module. Remove one of them.

It appears on the site but not in the administrator

That is expected. The chat is meant for site visitors, not the Joomla back end.

A page loads slowly

Chat widgets load asynchronously and should not block your page. If you notice a slowdown, test with and without the plugin enabled and compare. Our article on chat widget page speed explains how to measure it.

What Happens After Installation

Once live, the widget shows the chat bubble on every page. Mio answers from your content in the visitor’s language and hands the conversation to your team when needed. Your team works from the Talkmio Inbox in the browser or the mobile app for iOS and Android. When nobody is online, visitors are asked for an e-mail before their first message, and your later reply goes out by e-mail.

On the free plan you get one operator, one website and 50 AI answers a month. Paid plans, from Pro at €19 a month, add more operators, websites and AI answers, the e-mail channel and remove the “Powered by Talkmio” label. See pricing for the full list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add live chat to Joomla without coding?

Install a chat system plugin. With Talkmio, download the plugin ZIP, go to System, Install, Extensions, upload the package, then open System, Manage, Plugins, find System – Talkmio AI Live Chat, paste your site key, enable it and save. The widget then appears on every page of the site without any template edits.

Which Joomla versions does the Talkmio plugin support?

The Talkmio system plugin is built for Joomla 4 and Joomla 5. On older versions such as Joomla 3 you can still add the chat by pasting the install snippet before the closing body tag in your template’s index.php, ideally in a child or custom template so updates do not remove it.

Why does the chat widget not show on my Joomla site?

The most common causes are a disabled plugin, a site key with extra spaces, a cached page, or a domain mismatch between Joomla and the website you added in Talkmio. Clear Joomla’s cache and any CDN cache, check the plugin is enabled and reload in a private window. A strict Content Security Policy can also block the script.

Can I put the chat snippet in a Joomla Custom module?

It often fails, because Joomla editors strip script tags by default, and the module only shows where it is assigned. The system plugin is more reliable: it loads on every page regardless of template or menu item. If you must use code, add the snippet to the template’s index.php before the closing body tag instead.

Does the plugin recognise logged-in Joomla users?

Yes. The Talkmio Joomla plugin identifies logged-in users, so when a registered member starts a chat your team sees who they are instead of an anonymous visitor. Anonymous visitors still appear in the Inbox with country, page and device information from the live visitors view.

Will live chat work on a multilingual Joomla site?

Yes. The plugin loads on every language version. Leave the widget language on auto-detect so the interface follows the visitor, and the assistant replies in the language the visitor writes in, answering from your content. A question in one language can find an answer written in another, though translated pages give more natural replies.

The Bottom Line

To add live chat to Joomla 4 or 5, use a system plugin: it takes a few minutes, needs no code, survives template updates and identifies logged-in users. Use the template snippet only on older versions or when you cannot install extensions. Then spend your time on what matters more, the content the assistant answers from.
